CARTHAGE- William (Sam) R. Houston, 73, of 540 John Street, died on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. He was born on November 28, 1941 in Watertown, New York to William R.& Mary Trombley Houston. He graduated from Watertown High School.
He married JoAnn M. Cook on February 1, 1964 in Carthage. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, Carthage; his son, William J. Houston, and grandson, Kaid, William's companion April and her son Ethan, Carthage; Scott A. Houston, his companion Candice, granddaughters Megan and Samantha, Watertown, and granddaughter Candace Houston, and great grandson, Shaylor, Arizona. He is also survived by his dog and best friend, Suzette. He is predeceased by his father, William R. Houston, mother, Mary L Houston, and a sister, Jeane Duff.
He worked for Climax as a papermaker-printer for 15 years. As an American Red Cross of Northern New York, Volunteer for over 17 years, Sam selflessly assisted in several national disasters such as 9/11.
He also ran the Carthage slow-pitch softball league, founded the All Sports Booster Club at Carthage Central, enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, bowling and was the President of the Papermakers International Union.
Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., located at 500 State Street in Carthage from 5:00pm-7:00pm. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00pm at the Funeral Home. Burial will be held privately by the family in the Sanford Corners Cemetery in Calcium.
