Stephen C. Petrus

Copenhagen - Stephen Petrus, 82, passed away after a long battle with cancer and Lewy Body Dementia on Sunday, December 29, 2024, with his loving wife and family by his side. 

A private burial will be held at the Lowville Rural Cemetery.

Stephen was born in Lowville on March 7, 1942, to the late Anthony and Anna (Repak) Petrus. He was raised on a dairy farm and attended Copenhagen Central School. Stephen worked as a bus driver for the Copenhagen Central School District. He also opened his own barbershop, operating out of his own house, and dedicated his life to serving the people of his beloved home-town of Copenhagen. 

Stephen married Dawn Gudridge in 1962. They spent 62 years together, and could often be found playing cards together, going on long bike rides, pursuing flea markets, entertaining visitors, or playing with their beloved dogs. When he retired, Stephen bought a winter home in Florida which he and Dawn both enjoyed for 16 years. 

Stephen enjoyed working on and restoring classic cars. He earned many trophies from various local car shows, which he proudly displayed. 

He is survived by his wife, Dawn M. Petrus; two sons; a daughter; a sister of Adams, NY; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Anna Petrus; a son, who passed from cancer in 2019; an infant daughter who passed at birth; and a brother.
