CARTHAGE, N.Y. - Robert B. Shampine, 81, of 905 Alexandria St., Carthage, NY, died early Tuesday morning, June 30, at home under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Born May 7, 1934, in Carthage, NY, the son of Milton J. and Anna Howe Shampine, he graduated from the Carthage Augustinian Academy on June 24, 1951. He was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 31, 1957, and earned the rank of Specialist Fourth Class while stationed at Fort Benning, GA. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 30, 1959, and spent an additional four years in the USAR.
Mr. Shampine was employed at the Crown Zellerbach mill in Carthage in 1965 and retired in 1996 after 31 years. He married Martha Jean McIntosh on Oct. 23, 1965. Mr. Shampine was a history buff and an avid book collector.
He enjoyed watching his New York sports teams, the Yankees, Giants and the Knicks.
Robert was a selfless man and always put his wife and family first. He was predeceased by his parents and his three brothers, Kenneth F., Vancouver, WA, Lawrence H., Syracuse, NY and James A., Baldwinsville, NY. Surviving are his loving wife, Martha; a daughter, Robin Intorcia, Natural Bridge, NY; and three sons, Milton, Charles and Stuart, all of Carthage. Calling hours will be held noon to 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St, Carthage, followed by a Mass at St. James Church at 2:15 p.m.
