CARTHAGE- Richard W. "Shorty" Shatraw, 95, of 33685 NYS Rte. 3 died on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at home under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. He was born on April 8, 1921 in Fowler, New York to the late Seamore and Adelaide Simmons Shatraw.
He graduated from Antwerp High School in 1938, he attended college. He was a Millwright for St. Regis Paper Mill in Deferiet. He married Marion Hamner September 1, 1943 in Antwerp. She died on December 24, 2003.
He is survived by four daughters, Judith Pitner, Walport, Oregon; Joan Schermerhorn, Pleasant Lake; Joyce Shatraw and her companion Correll Sheperd, Carthage; and Marilyn Shatraw, Carthage. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, his wife and 4 sisters, Geraldine Cooper, Margaret Premo, Vida Miller Wallis, Bertha Weir, and 1 brother, Joe Shatraw.
He enjoyed reading and gardening.
Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., located at 500 State Street in Carthage. A Funeral Service will be held at 7:00pm in the Chapel of the Funeral Home with The Revered Tom Sherwood, officiating, pastor of the Baptist Church in Carthage.
