HARRISVILLE– Richard “Dick” Burgess, 83, of Maple Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at his home.
Services will be held privately by the family.
Richard was born on March 4, 1941, in Harrisville, New York, the son of the late Lyle & Lucia (Stephenson) Burgess. He graduated from Harrisville Central School in 1958 and from the Albany School of Pharmacy in 1962. He was employed as a pharmacist for 36 years with Kinney Drugs, starting in Carthage, New York, and then retiring in Gouverneur, New York, in 2001. He was a member of the Harrisville United Methodist Church.
He was a dedicated father and husband to his former wife of 30 years, Susan Burgess, who both worked hard to help put their three sons through college. He was an avid golfer and a past member of the Gouverneur Country Club. He was co-owner of the Happy Acres Hunting Club, which his father Lyle established in 1956. Three different hunting camps were built over time with the completion of the current hunting camp in 2000. He also hosted the annual Happy Acres get-togethers which were always well attended.
Dick enjoyed hunting, especially deer hunting, bird watching, and was fond of helping others throughout his lifetime. He always enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren at the camp and family functions. He was an avid sports fan and followed the L.A. Dodgers, Dallas Cowgirls, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Several family trips were taken to Montreal to watch the Expos at both Jarry Park and Olympic Stadium. The family treasured these get-aways and always looked forward to them.
He was a terrible euchre player, couldn’t play pitch to save his ass, and he thought Eric Clapton was God!
Survivors include his children, Kevin (Lisa) Burgess, Syracuse, NY; Brian (Jean) Burgess, Johnson City, Tennessee; and Darren (Jeannette) Burgess, Rodman, NY. Along with four grandchildren, Kayleigh Begley, Erica Robinson, Chelsea Seeber, and Seth Burgess; and five great-grandchildren.
Dick is predeceased by his siblings, Beverly Seymour and Dale Burgess.
The family wishes to express gratitude to his in-home care providers for their loving care and dedication.
Donations in Dick’s memory may be made to Lewis County Hospice, the Harrisville Fire Dept./Rescue Squad, or the Natural Bridge Rescue Squad.
Arrangements are with Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. Condolences may be made online at www.lundyfuneralhome.com.
