ANTWERP Gwendolyn J. VanOrman, 84, of Oxbow, New York, died on Friday evening, July 28, 2017 at River Hospital, Alexandria Bay.
Born on May 11, 1933 in Norwood, New York, a daughter of the late Joseph and Flo Otta Simmons Tharrett, she graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School. On December 13, 1955 she married Raymond A. VanOrman Sr. in Swanton, Vermont. Together they raised 11 children and owned and operated Smileys Ice Cream in Oxbow.
Gwendolyn was a member of the Oxbow Fire Department Auxiliary as well as a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, bingo and going to the casino.
She is survived by nine children, Raymond A. Dutch" (Susan) VanOrman Jr. of Ogdensburg; Maxine J. Domorod of Rome; Richard A. VanOrman of Oregon; Tammy D. (Albert) White of Theresa; Billie K. (Orville Junior) Manning of Antwerp; Chyrel A. (Gary) Davis of Philadelphia; Jerry J. (Rhonda) VanOrman of Gouverneur; Jay J. (Kim) VanOrman of Theresa; Janet L. VanOrman and her companion Mark Denicola of Oxbow; two sisters, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Raymond, who died on November 9, 2005, as well as two sons, Rex Allen and Jesse James VanOrman. Also predeceasing her are two brothers and a sister.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Oxbow Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Oxbow Cemetery. Immediately following the burial, there will be a gathering at the Oxbow Fire Hall. All are welcome.
