CARTHAGE – Reginald E. "Reggie" Smith, 83, died on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Riverledge Nursing Home, Ogdensburg.
Reggie was born on October 26, 1934 in Beaver Falls, New York, a son of the late Elmer E. and Mary Jane Burnham (Smith). He graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1952. He went on to serve in the United States Naval Reserves from 1953-1956. In 1956, Reggie joined the Army National Guard and worked for the National Guard and Army Reserves at Fort Drum, until retiring in July of 1992.
He was a volunteer fireman for Herrings Fire Department for 30 years and Great Bend Fire Department for 11 years. He was also Jefferson County Fire Police member as Sergeant at Arms.
Reggie was a member of the Carthage Elks Lodge, BPOE #1762 for 30 years, as well as an honorary member of the Carthage American Legion Post #789 for 35 years.
He enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, boating and bowling.
His first marriage to Jane Green ended in divorce. In 1971, he married Arlene Rumney. Arlene passed away in 1977.
He is survived by three children, Shaughn M. Lyle Snyder of Virginia; Jeanne L. (Joe) Wilcox of Syracuse; Brett A. (Kim) Smith of Tennessee; four grandsons, Derek Smith; Marcus Snyder; Colby Snyder; and Dustin Smith; one granddaughter, Rhyan (Wilcox) Tompkins; two great-grandchildren, Raelynn Baker and Brayton Tompkins; and a brother, Ernest A. Smith of Beaver Falls. He is predeceased by Viola Richard, his companion of eight years. She died on May 3, 2017.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2017 from 11-1 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service with Military Honors will immediately follow at 1 PM in the Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by The Reverend Canon Samuel P. Lundy. Spring burial will be in New St. James Cemetery, Carthage.
